Spiritual Care at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center
by Margaret Ley - 2008 Summer Chaplaincy Newsletter

The Tri-Cities Cancer Center continues to grow and meet the needs of oncology patients in our area.  Spiritual well-being is an important component of healing and the Cancer Center recognizes the value of spiritual care. The chaplain program, which has been providing spiritual care for patients, has been growing along with the center.

Beginning in 2002, The Chaplaincy partnered with the Cancer Center to provide a staff chaplain dedicated to working with patients and became an integral part of Support Services.  This program was later extended to include spiritual care to patients who finished treatment.  Bereavement Care is also available for family members grieving the loss of a loved one.

With the recent expansion of Support Services and the addition of a Wellness Center the cancer center is becoming recognized as a resource to all people in our region who have been touched by cancer.  The chaplain program also extends from beyond the walls of the center into the community to assist those who are facing the disorientation that often comes with a diagnosis of cancer.  Spiritual care consists of helping people cope with their circumstances, find meaning and purpose, and connect with spiritual resources that will help them adapt to treatment.  The partnership between The Chaplaincy and the Tri-Cities Cancer Center is another example of our commitment to providing impeccable spiritual, emotional, and physical care.
